THE PITCH

This was a fun little project I did for the City of Eugene and their new “Curbside Composting” program. I’d wanted to do a ‘lowpoly’ project for a while, and when the city seemed open to doing a 3D animated spot, I pitched it hard! I had this idea of a small map of the city with a huge hardbody particle system dumping food over the city to represent how much food waste gets thrown away. Then I would present the idea of throwing your food waste away using fun, pastel graphics and use little cylinders as the ‘stages’ by which everything would transition. I had two weeks to produce this video, and the result was a fun test of my skills as an artist and creative.

PRODUCTION

Getting the food waste to dump on the city was very important. Actual food waste is disgusting - I didn’t want to use shock value with our audience. Keeping things lighthearted with the lowpoly food dumping was a key part of the project and I needed to get it right. After a few hours of tweaks, I believe I did.

I’m not much of a 3D modeler myself, but using references of local landmarks I was able to build lowpoly representations of these key landmarks in order to make them fit into the cohesive style of the spot. As they say: know your limits!

I just used my limits as stylistic choice

FINAL RESULT

Summary

From the initial pitch to the final project took just under two months of production. I was honored to be able to lead such a talented, international group of artists and animators to produce this spot, truly a standout both in presentation, mood and feel, conveying that refilling bottles - not just recycling them - is the way of the future.
